So, a funny thing happened about a month ago...
On Thanksgiving weekend, I went to Regina to visit my family. It had been some time since I'd managed to get home, between the craziness of the field season and my first masters course. It was the first time I was back since mid-July.
I made a point of looking up Meg and Karl, particularly to show Meg my beard (so I could cut it off - at least mostly. I knew she'd want to see it first). On that Friday night they were having some people over from IVCF. I came over to ensure I would get to see them at least a little bit. I had also made plans with Bryan that evening, so I knew I couldn't stay long. I wasn't really expecting to know anyone there other than Meg and Karl (apparently, the fact that the Ramsey boys were still around had slipped my mind).
To my surprise, I met a rather interesting young woman there - Christine. We'd been introduced several months before at Meg and Karl's gift opening the day after their wedding, but that was the extent of our interaction. She was rather fetchingly dressed in this outfit:
I talked to Christine a little at the IVCF gathering. Meg made her feel my beard (after Meg had done the same). I certainly found her intriguing, but, with some regret, I left for my plans with Bryan.
Afterwards, I got in touch with Meg, and asked her if, by chance, Christine was single. Meg offered to ask Christine whether it was all right to pass on her e-mail address to me. I sent her an e-mail saying I'd be interested in getting to know her. Luckily, we got in contact by other means quickly after that, as her first few e-mails were lost because of a filter on my e-mail account.
Over the past month, we've talked a lot and managed to briefly meet for supper when I was in Regina for work in late October. It wasn't until this past weekend that we were able to spend any real time together.
On Saturday, we had our first official "date". We went out for supper, played mini-golf, and then rented a movie; it was wonderful. On Sunday, I attended Christine's church with her, and then we spent the rest of the day together. We officially became a couple this weekend.
Christine's room-mate, J.J., was kind of enough to take a couple of pictures to commemorate our first date. I'll put up two here.
It seems that, in the immortal words of Mike Myers, "I'm smitten. I'm in deep smit", and I couldn't be happier. Although this is a long-distance relationship, over the next month and a half we've arranged to see each other often. That'll be great. It's important that we see each other as much as possible, before I head off to the field in January.
One last picture: Christine taking a nap with my cat, Bilbo, on Sunday afternoon.

Let me be the first to congratulate you here on your blog, Matt. She is a charmer that girl - I quite like her (and you of course as well).
You are both wonderful :)
-Becca
Congrats Matt, that is awesome.
Thanks Becca and Bron! So far we seem to be pretty happy with another! (I figure she'll come to her senses sooner or later, but I'll enjoy it until then :P)
Ah, Julia. You're funny. Christine told me about talking to you, and I could just imagine your reaction. I'll be down your way Dec. 1, to accompany Christine to the IVCF formal, so hopefully I'll see you then.
Matt, Matt, Matt. I'm happy for you, even though this has shaken up my entire world. Actually not, but I'm still happy for you. But the question is does she like "So I Married An Axe Murderer"? I think that's one of those key tests that she has to pass. If she can quote it freely, forget dating and just marry her.
Derek out.
"Turn down the Bay City Rollers! The soccer game's about to begin!"
Thanks Derek! I had forgotten to ask her the all-important "What do you think of So I Married An Axe Murderer?" question. I'll get right on that.
I'm pretty sure that this is the best exchange ever. Especially with the Axe Murderer quotations.
And I wanted to make sure that I mentioned how cute you guys are, and how jealous I am that Christine has gotten to nap with Bilbo. That would be the makings of a good nap. I miss cuddling Bilbo. Billy makes me lose my voice. Maybe when I'm in town, I'm going to have to take some pre-emptive Reactine and hug your cat.
ok well you dont know who i am at all... but i'm friends with christine and she is swell. we went for supper tonight and she has nothing but good things to say about you. so have fun... take care of her... and maybe someday i will meet you. perhaps you will be wearing a tuxedo and standing at the end of an aisle....?
Hello Trisha! Christine mentioned you, and I will look forward to meeting you as well. We'll see about the other thing you mentioned...
