Going North?

For those who don't know, I was laid off from my job in December. A couple of days ago, I received a job offer, for a position in Iqaluit; I'm still waiting to hear back what the exact terms of the offer is, they had to keep the call brief because of a blizzard which forced them to shut their office down for the day.

I am feeling a mixture of excitement and trepidation about this. If I accept the position, we will have to move to Baffin Island, to an isolated community with no road access to the rest of Canada. Christine will have to leave a job she loves, and we will have to either rent out or sell the house we bought less than a year ago.

However, there is a certain appeal to the idea. Few people get to see that far north, and experience the unique beauty of Nunavut. Accepting this position would also get me into the federal government system, which gives the potential of transferring to a job elsewhere in a couple of years time.

Waiting to see the offer and determine whether we could make a go of this is hard, as well as wondering whether I could get a job that would allow us to stay in Saskatoon, but unless some other employer calls in the next few days, I will have to give my decision on this one.

Christine has been trying to find people who would be willing to come visit us in Iqaluit. It is not cheap flying up there, but if we do go, we're hoping a few people are willing to make the trip.

May you live in interesting times.
